EU prepares for 8th UN Forum on Forests
The preparation of the 8th United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) was one of the themes of the two-day meeting of the Working Party on Forestry in Prague.
Another point on the agenda was the preparation of the 19th session of the FAO Committee on Forestry (COFO). The Czech Presidency will coordinate participation in these two important events and negotiate on behalf of the EU.
Representatives of the EU Member States came to Prague to prepare a common position for these two important dates on the forestry calendar. It was clear from the workshops that taking into account the role of forests and forestry in the fight against climate change, protection of our biological diversity and putting an end to global deforestation will be of utmost importance. The aim of the meeting was also to find tools to coordinate different methods of finance in order to reach these goals.
The UN Forum on Forest was established by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in 2000 as a global forum to deal with questions of forests and forestry. At the 7th session of the UNFF in 2007 a resolution on all types of forests was adopted as an international instrument for sustainable management of forests along with a multi-year work programme. The next session of the UNFF is planned for the end of April 2009. The main themes are “Forests in a changing environment” and “Means of implementation for sustainable forest management”.
